The American Heart Association’s Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Course is an advanced, instructor-led classroom course that highlights the importance of team dynamics and communication, systems of care and immediate post-cardiac-arrest care. It also covers airway management and related pharmacology.

Course Content

  • Basic life support skills
  • Recognition and early management of respiratory and cardiac arrest
  • Recognition and early management of peri-arrest conditions such as symptomatic bradycardia
  • Airway management
  • Related pharmacology
  • Management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and stroke
  • Effective communication as a member and leader of a resuscitation team
  • Effective Resuscitation Team Dynamics

Prerequisites and preparation

This course does not teach BLS skills, interpretation of rhythm strips, or basic ACLS pharmacology. Thus all Students are required to complete the pre-test prior to class. A print-out of the pre-test results must be provided to the instructor prior to the beginning of class. Directions to complete the ACLS pre-test will be available in the student manual. Students who have not studied and prepared for this course will be rescheduled into another class to allow them adequate preparation for successful completion of the class.

ACLS is designed for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest and other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units, Paramedics, Physicians, Physicians Assistants, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, etc.
